Gavalohori is an old historical village with particularly interesting and well-preserved folk architecture. It is located on Cape Drapanos in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region. Its location is 25 km east of Chania which takes about 20 minutes to drive along the National Road. In this officially protected, traditional village a lot of interesting buildings can be found, such as the 18th century two-roomed, arched olive oil press, the temples of Panagia and Agios Sergios, the old school, and many residences. Many of the well-known Gavaliana wells still stand within a fantastic landscape.

About Crete (Source Discover Greece) The largest island in Greece, Crete is renowned for its pin-up beaches, wild natural beauty, exquisite cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. As Crete’s most celebrated author, Nikos Kazantzakis (of Zorba the Greek fame), once wrote: “The mystery of Crete runs deep. Whoever sets foot on this island senses a mysterious force coursing warmly and beneficently through their veins, sensing their soul beginning to grow.”

From the Agent: "A beautiful 46m² house which has been lovingly restored by the current owner. Entrance to the property is from the rear of the house and you enter into the open kitchen and living area. The kitchen has been custom built by a local craftsmen and features a double sink, gas stove and a dishwasher. Wooden floorboards and ceilings give a lovely warmth throughout the property. There is a downstairs WC under the built in staircase and the washing machine also fits neatly into this space. The wooden staircase was hand crafted and features built in cupboards for extra storage.

Upstairs leads into the main bedroom with built in wardrobes and views of Gavalochori valley and the White Mountains which are covered in snow in winter. There is also second bedroom which would be great as an office space or guest room. The handmade wooden doors are sliding to create more space. The bathroom features a bathtub and shower with a custom built sink with stunning views over the courtyard and out to the white mountains. At the top of the stairs, french doors open to a proposed balcony. Up here , you can see views of the valley and the mountains. This could be the perfect outdoor space for entertaining guests and watching the sunset in the evening.

Outside, the courtyard has been graveled for low maintenance and garden beds have been planted with various Mediterranean plants. The courtyard allows for a private space for dining in the evening overlooking the stone ruins next door. At the bottom on the garden, the property boundary continues around to the left. Here there is a further 50m² of land surround by a ruin. This would a perfect project for an extra guest room or summer house.

The original, large wooden windows allow plenty of light to create a feeling of spaciousness. All windows and doors are fitted with fly screens through out the property. The traditional stone features around each window and door, add a lovely charm to the house. The house also features solar hot water conveniently located on the roof. When the property was recently restored, a flat roof was installed for a future rood garden/ terrace with views of Souda Bay and the Mediterranean.

This property truly is something unique. Full of traditional features and charm, yet it is very light and airy inside and has all the modern conveniences. It’s low maintenance garden and closeness to the beach, makes this a perfect home for a couple or a ‘lock up and leave’ holiday home."
